What matters most? Life lived more abundantly.
Thought history, in every culture, there has always been an attempt made to account for the continuance of the spirit beyond death. Humans being "self aware" or feeling a vague "Consciousness" does not answer why we have to deal with the intrinsic understanding that in every human being there is a soul, nor does it account for the morality that is written into our very nature. I have recently found that everything I have always tried to out into words is pretty much summed up in C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." I highly recommend you give it a read through.
